World Rainforest Day

What is World Rainforest Day?

World Rainforest Day was on June 22nd, 2022 to bring awareness and advocacy to our rainforests. At Tayst Coffee sustainability is close to our hearts. With the theme of this year being ‘The Time is Now’, there is so much to learn from the World Resource Day Organization with panels and virtual events to get involved.

Is Coffee Bad For the Environment?

You might be wondering: just what does coffee have to do with the rainforest? The answer: everything. Coffee was originally grown in the canopies of rainforests before farmers started to mow down rainforests to make space for massive coffee plantations. The results have been devastating for the rainforests and the animals that live there.

A study from Ohio state revealed that for every cup of coffee consumed, almost one square inch of rainforest had to be destroyed. In other words, coffee and climate change are very much tied together, and even though rainforests originally gave us the coffee bean, we’ve now turned around and destroyed the rainforests to farm even more. On average, every year about 78 million acres are burned. The environment can not sustain this endless greed.

One square inch of rainforest per cup of coffee might not seem like much, but how much coffee do you or an office drink every day? Those cups of coffee build up. There is a better, and more environmentally friendly way to farm coffee: being Rainforest Alliance Certified.

What is Tayst Doing to Fight Coffee’s Environmental Impact?

The Rainforest Alliance is just one of many eco-friendly businesses that are trying to fight back against global greed and climate change. That means we source our coffee beans from coffee farms or groups that work with the Rainforest Alliance. The Rainforest Alliance helps to improve the livelihood and wellbeing of these farm communities and annually audits the farms with their rigorous standards. Their main goals are to protect biodiversity, deliver financial benefits to farmers, and give the farm and its community the respect they deserve.

Protecting biodiversity does not only protect the world, it protects the future of coffee as well. The survivability of coffee and climate change are truly tied together. With rising temperatures that include extreme periods of rain and drought, farming will be more difficult than ever before, potentially reducing the rainforest areas suitable for growing coffee by up to 50% by 2050. The climate change impact on coffee production is just as important as the rainforest’s lifeblood.

But eco-friendly coffee and climate change don’t stop there. Here at Tayst, we believe that every step of the coffee industry needs to be revamped to prioritize a greener way of life. For us, having plastic-free k cups is just as important as working with sustainable farmers, and healthier as well! Living a sustainable lifestyle goes a long way to benefit both you and the world around you.
